ROSHEN’S
CHESS PROFILE

I started playing chess at the age of 6, in an afterschool program with some of my friends. After two years, I finally was able to get the opportunity to play in an actual rated chess tournament. Since then, I have been working for over a decade to improve my chess skills while, at the same time, managing my other interests (academic and extracurricular). More recently, after founding Roshen Nair Foundation in 2019, I have focused many of my efforts on also helping other students grow and learn the same life lessons. I was able to learn over the years.

ROSHEN’S

CHESS PROFILE

In my time as a chess player, I have been blessed to be able to win 14 Oregon state chess championships (9 individual and 5 team), 1 national championship, as well as prizes at several international chess events including the 1st place prize of $7000 at the North.American Open (U2100 Section). More recently, I have also served many leadership roles including as a Secretary & Director of Fundraising on the prestigious Board of Directors of the Oregon Chess Federation (the nationally recognized and highest chess organization in the state of Oregon). I have also been formally trained, tested, and certified as a trainer by FIDE (the World Chess Organization) with my official title as a National-level Instructor (NI).

ROSHEN’S CHESS ACADEMY

Roshen's Chess Academy was established in June, 2019 (while I was in 7th rade). Even though I had already started providing Chess services to the community prior to that based on my State/National/International Chess achievements since 2014, I thought it was time to organize everything under one common umbrella. This was one inspiration for me to start Roshen’s Chess Academy.

ROSHEN’S CHESS STORY

I started playing chess at the age of 6, in a common after-school program while my parents were at work. After a long, tiring yet meaningful journey, I found myself as a 12-year old kid playing in the international chess event at the 2018 North American Open, hoping to gain as much experience as possible. I didn’t realize back then that my life was just about to make a huge turn – as a player and much more.

We feel lucky that we came across Roshen and his dad, Sanjay, at Chinmaya Mission. My 9 yr old son had started playing a little bit chess but we had no one to guide us. It can make you feel a little awkward asking people around about the structure of the chess competitions and the websites are good but there are lots of grey area. For us the guidance we have received from Sanjay and Roshen is outstanding. It’s rare that you meet people as giving and kind as this father-son duo.

Special thanks for the interest and dedication you have inculcated in our twins. They love and respect you and Roshen and that’s a reflection of your sincerity towards this sport. You’re building great character in this generation through your efforts.
